Gabby Douglass: A New Face for Essence

The Obamas. Mary J. Blige. Tyler Perry. Kerry Washington. Jill Scott.  Maybe you can name a few others. When Essence magazine decides who should be the face of their next cover, it often seems like the same old faces and poses (hand on your hip or hands on both hips). Maybe these are the faces that sell magazines, but we’re always grateful when Essence decides to be a little more adventurous/creative and throws in a new set of faces. The December 2012 issue of Essence features Gabby Douglas on one cover version and Carmelita Jeter, Sanya Richards-Ross, Allyson Felix, and Gabby on another. Go Olympic ladies! As for future issues, let’s hope Essence comes with some fresh faces, poses, and covers for 2013. That’s a hefty New Year’s Resolution, I’d say.

Happy reading, y’all.

  1. Let’s jus hope we don’t have to hear anymore bad commentary on Gabrielle Douglas’ hair like during the Olympics. Those comments were just embarrassing! She looks beautiful wearing her gold medal! What encouragement for young black girls doing gymnastics! 🙂

  2. Young Miss Gabby looks quite lovely on the cover. And her tresses are on point, Not that there was anything wrong in the first place.(sigh). I think the sky is the limit for this young lady. She’s a grat role model for young black girls.
